Yeah, I saw this on the Yahoo.com front page yesterday. It seems that the News loves these stories, and not just the Japan news. I can see either CNN or BBC actually putting in a step-by-step chart with diagrams on how to make the gas in an upcoming report.
It's said that there are many reasons for Japanese people to resort to suicide; An often cited reason is overwhelming debt. But, that's something that drives a person to suicide. What allows so many to actually carry out the act? IMO, it's the lingering belief that suicide is still an honorable way out of trouble. My best Japanese friend once told me that it's still a strongly held belief that the highest form of apology one can offer in Japan is suicide.

Today Bloomberg posted an article with the recipe for the gas after stating that the Japanese police were trying to take this type of information off the web in the same article!
I sent of a letter to the editor and the authors telling then that I though it was irresponsible and sensational journalism at it's worst.

It's great that you guys let them know, but I feel so jaded about the whole deal. I mean, it's one of the clearest examples of how the media manipulates people to create news or perpetuate newsmaking trends, even deadly ones.
I think of the guy in that movie "Network" when he keeps saying, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!"
But, I am going to keep taking it, I guess. Or drop out.
