I really wish Hollywood would just buzz off on the remakes. Its almost as if the majority of writers have completely forgot how to create plots and are therefore depending on other market's films to be their "inspiration." Its pretty annoying.

Western writers have found that the same old formula for stories that has been popular for the last 100 years of "motion picture entertainment" is no longer working and, rather than invent something new, they've decided to just take what's worked elsewhere.
Considering how big the cult following of foreign media actually is, it should be no surprise that North American creators are looking to the Middle-East and Asia for the next big thing.
It's only a matter of time before we see an American version of Winter Sonata, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Doraemon. If I'm not mistaken, the PowerPuff Girls are an adaptation of Earth Defender Mao-chan. ;_;

There was news a while back that Leonardo DiCaprio was producing a live-action version of "Akira."
Hmmmm... Have to wait and see, I guess.

It was pretty solid - Leonardo was to be Canada I think and Akira would be played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. JGL is a fantastic actor (see The Lookout if you haven't already - amazing film) and not quite the 'it' boy so aybe they are looking for skill. It will be interesting to see.
