I dunno, I don't like the pension system much either (for a different reason: any foreigner who stays in Japan for more than 3 years but less than their entire lives will lose a lot of money on the system). But your writeup about it seemed too much like the ranting of an insane lunatic. Maybe it's because I'm from another "commie pinko" country that has a similar system.
Interesting point about "more than 3 yrs" .... are there any methods for accessing this money inbetween 3 yrs and lifetime?? .... and also, what's the criteria for getting it prior to 3 yrs, exit from Japan with no return i'm guessing.
I do not understand how I could ever be consider an insane lunatic. I do not desire for someone else to benefit from my hard work. I earn that money so I should decide how I choose to invest it for my future. I can do a lot better job investing in my future than any government.
Here's a tip, then: If you don't want to come off sounding like a lunatic, don't use really emotionally-charged words like "pinko commie" to describe a capitalist but somewhat socialist system.

Well, obviously we aren't going to see eye to eye on this. I do hope for your sake that you will not need to use your health insurance, but I sure am glad that I have mine.
I will ask you, though, to do all of us foreigners a favour. Remember that the doctors and nurses at the hospital, and the guy who works down at city hall, do not make up the system. Being a jerk to them will do absolutely nothing to help your case, but it will hurt the image of foreigners in general.

The only persons image I am worried about is mine; personally I don`t care if I offend someone. If a person does not like me due to the way I choose to behave then that is too bad for them. Usually people who get so offend by me have no personal connection to me so I do not have to invest much of my energy in giving them reason to like me.

as these kind of taxes are based on a previous years income, you will get a benefit next year because I assume you only worked a portion of the fiscal year. I too don't like it but I chose Japan to live so good with the bad... try paying 48.5% in the dollar in tax like I used to in Australia... no thanks, I'll the the pinko system any day. I see it as motivation to stay gainfully employed without a pay cut... keep that as a strategy and the pinko system works for you. I also take full advantage of the almost free medical treatment I get... including dental which is a massive bonus... unlike Australia where you are gouged at every turn. Not sure how the US system stacks up, I would be keen to hear a comparison.

I dislike the socialist tendencies of the Japanese government, but I obviously accept them for my short term stay here. I'm sad to watch America go the same way. I should not have to pay for your broken arm. It's all about personal responsibility for me.
Even though I rarely go to the doctor, I do like the socialized health care system here because I think a government should take responsibility for the good health of its citizens. The pension plan here is a different story, at least as it applies to foreigners. I imagine with enough pressure, the Japanese government might be willing to extend the pension refund period to foreigners beyond 3 years. I read somewhere that the reason 3 years was decided upon was that it was believed that most foreigners returned to their home countries within three years. That was a statement made by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Very statistical and cold, I know. But, before the 3-year refund there wasn't one, so things do change.
Interesting info Billy ..... good to see there was some change but personally would like to see it lifed by another few years. I'm several years in so far ... although only 1 legally so 2 yrs to go i guess ... anything can happen in that time and would be nice to know i may be able to make a claim on the $$ if need be.
