Doraemon, a catlike robot from the 22nd century, was recently named Japan's Ambassador to Anime by the Foreign Ministry in an effort to raise awareness of Japan's booming anime and manga industries, as well as to improve the nation's image abroad.

Doraemon is perhaps one of the most recognizable characters in Japanese pop culture, and has been gaining in popularity across asia despite the lack of new anime or manga issues. The Japanese government hopes to send people dressed up in the over-sized blue outfits to anime conventions around the world in order to get more people interested in Japanese media and culture. All in all, this could be a good thing. The key, though, is keeping the government out of the picture when Doraemon is working his magic.
