Have you ever wondered what information the government uses to determine how serious their foreign crime problem is? I know I have. After a little bit of digging through the government statistics pages and a little bit of Google, I've managed to put together a pretty compelling case for the crime problem in Japan.
That said, I don't think many people will be surprised with the actual data.

The first column is page views (I would guess) so that's from 661 thousand page...There was a similar case two years ago when a police sergeant drove to work drunk,...Takes one to know one....I don't know what they're called, but you put them in your boots to make them stand...And here's that follow-up post:

You won't catch me committing such heinous crimes as speeding or parking illegally!
It's kind of scary to see a government body make such shoddy use of numbers to make their case, while at the same time ignoring the more heinous activities that are occurring around the country. Activities like diverting tax money collected for road work to non-road expenditures (the list goes on).
I don't mind paying tax when it's well spent, but it pisses me off to pay 46.6 Yen per litre on something that's supposed to go towards improving the transportation system, then drive down the same roads that have potholes large enough to hide bodies for 2+ years.
Seriously ... those potholes outside the Kakamigahara Police Station have been there since my first visit in 2006....
Back on topic, though, it's a shame that Japanese Statisticians have failed Statistics 101 but carry so much clout in the system. One day they'll overstate something and another country will call them on it, then we'll just see another round of apologies and resignations.

I did like this post very much and thought it was well worded. Unfortunately, politicians can put a spin on anything to help their cause.

Kinda makes you wanna get into politics, ne? I tell ya, I'd love to have other people pay for my house upgrades, limo and other niceties, while being treated nicely by businesses who want to do business with me. Of course, I'd keep it all low profile but, when it inevitably came to light, I'd just apologize on TV and keep all my stuff
