Great read, especially the way Gabriel resolved his problem. Incidentally, I opened my first bank account in Japan without an inkan and I still have that account today. However, I've since opened accounts at two other banks and the post office but have needed an inkan for all of them. For the first of those, I went to the 100 yen shop and picked a random stamp - which was accepted!

Haha. That's great, Nick. I'm thinking of having a custom hanko made that reads: 「冗談」 For those that can't read this kanji the reading is "joudan" (close to my name Jo-dan) and it means joke.

Wow that looks to me as though there is no way to instantly cancel a potentially stolen card... not only has he been clearly unable to call them to report it but there is a lag time in processing the report - that's, like, really really freakin insane! lol

From the blog post:
"I have to wait 10 days for the lost card to be deactivated, then 2 full weeks after that time to be reissued a card. If I wanted a new card issued on the spot, it would cost me 2100yen."
Understand the rant. Not paying the 2100 yen... Can't get my head around that one.

I experienced the whole ATM closing thing last night. It pissed me off to no end, but as luck would have it a couple of buck wild Japanese guys offered me to join their after hours party so I still have a good time.
