The amount of people using the highway bus system in Japan is increasing and it's a lot cheaper than taking the Shinkansen (but takes more time).
It's a great option for budget travelers that is often overlooked.

I just had my first experience with a highway bus last Friday night - Tokyo to Imabari. And I gotta say...not impressed. I will continue to shell out for the trains as long as I can afford to do so. (And since I don't have to orchestrate the migration plan for a family of 8, it's within my means.) I got almost zero sleep and got off the bus with a tweaked neck and some lower back pain.
That poor kid, I hope he has a stock of paper bags!
"My son loves trains and he gets sick on buses," she adds. "But the bus is a lot cheaper, so we just make him put up with it."

You guys are too funny! I recently packed some guests off to Fuji-san on the highway bus and they didn't comment either way - then again they were pretty stoked to have the Fuji-san sunrise experience and it was only a couple of hours from Shinjuku.
I've taken the highway bus plenty of times and it's not a big deal. I mean... it's a bus. Who doesn't know what a bus is like before you get onto one? I don't get what the big deal is. I usually watch a DVD or play my DS or sleep.
How can you sleep with the stench of salaryman socks all around you?
Maybe we've been taking different buses. Mine usually have a mix of middle age men, women, and college aged people. One guy drank for about 2 hours straight. Drink, toilet, drink toilet, good times. Everybody is quiet and nobody stinks. You need to stop taking those busted lines and hop on the smoother VIP routes.
I take highway buses all the time. I've taken them to Kyoto, Niigata, and Aomori many times. They're far more affordable than the Shinkansen. For overnight I use an eyemask to help me sleep. I notice a number of people use those neck pillows.
