Total rubbish. About the only correct bits are Japanese software developers are crap (speaking as one myself!) and you get double-bagged at McDs (I would guess), but all the rest is either sloppy or just plain wrong. Zen design is a western concept, and software and UI design is not outsourced - Sony, Panasonic, etc write most of the stuff themselves or cross-license to each other.
Anyway, Japanese seem to love messy front-ends, be it mobiles, portals (Yahoo! gives me a headache every time) or their desktops on their PCs. Just because the writer couldn't work out how to find his voice mail (I remember once failing to find it on my mother's Nokia in the UK) it doesn't mean it's hidden. (I keep forgetting the phone number for my voice mail, but that's a different matter all together!)
And finally, to top it all, they failed to quote anything whatsoever from the greatest blog on Japanese technology trends.
No Soc and they're off my Christmas card list.

I'm the one who can't find my voicemail - there's a separate number?
Anyway, that part was an editorial comment on my part - sorry for any confusion it caused. Glad to see an opinion as I am not very tech minded - just a simple user most of the time...

ShaneS, I didn't mean you, I meant the main article. Not sure what you mean by outgoing message though!

Actually sounds spot on for software dev as we have experienced here. Outsourcing the actual coding and dev to consultants allows the companies to claim it as their own but not have to keep a full IT staff. This also means, of course, having no knowledge of developed systems inside the company and so spending a lot of money reinventing the wheel and staying 15yrs behind the software industry but - hey, who cares when your customer base has no alternative but to use your stuff... lol think I've said enough now
