Wow great article thanks. I have to say I'm kinda with the Japanese on this one. I did the facebook and myspace thing for a while but quickly hid my profile because of all the ridiculous friend requests from people with whom I had nothing in common and outright harassment. These sites are just so vague and broad I don't see the point - frankly my experience was that the unifying element was a kind of desperation for sex or friends. I mean, seriously, those things called "friends" are just links to a page having thousands of them means absolutely nothing.
I reckon things like jSoc, where people come together for a reason and shared interest are a far better way to go.
