Should you buy a .JP Domain Name?

Dale Carnegie once said, "a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language". That applies to domain names, too. Having your own name with a .com on the end is pretty cool, and easy for your friends to find your site, too. How about in Japan, wouldn't it be easy to tell your Japanese friends your katakana domain name with a simple .jp on the end? How would you feel if some other foreigner in Japan snapped up your name before you? Jason got his .jp domain name, I got mine, now how about you?

I think that today with most traffic is generated from search engines, the importance of a catchy domain name is less important. Search engines seems to favorite .com domains, but I guess it will change as more more country domains will hold popular sites.

Most site traffic is due to search engines, however, it never hurts to have a little extra ammo in your pocket when trying to convey a website to people. What's easier to remember? whateverlongname.wordpress.com, or www.どんな.jp?

Most of the people I've met in this country have a hard time remembering internet-related sites, so it's only in our best interest to make things easier for them :)

It is a real interesting article and I too did not realise how easy it was to have your domain in Japanese. It certainly would be easy for you if you wanted to sell your school or curricula to students and being able to tell them to type in your katakana version of your name and it should bring you up is really convenient!!

@Matigo:
As I've said, the domain name is less important, not completely unimportant. A good domain name is always a bonus.
