Ok. This is what I don't understand. Where are all of these discarded items going now? I know that to discard large items (sodai gomi) you need to buy a little sticker from your municipality and then they will pick it up. But what do they do with it? I always assumed that they either sold it to second hand shops in Japan or shipped it abroad as second hand goods or scrap parts...
My point is, aren't the already making money from these discarded goods. And if so then how does this urban mining concept change anything?

Even though I'm not a share/bonds junkie, I would advise people to invest into recycling companies!
