Here's an article from 1997 which is still relevant today. Japan's toilets cover the spectrum - from holes in the floor to automatic bum-washing, light controlling, auto flushing, auto-seat warming and moving, and even remote controls. I try to avoid "hole in the floor" toilets as much as possible, and after two years learned that on the occasions I had used them, I was facing the wrong way! Likewise, I've had problems finding the flush on these fancy high tech units which are too clever for their own good!

And the in floor models in public places force us gals to make good use of the free tissues that get handed out everywhere in Japan - something that I learned the hard way my first time! I thought that TP was a world wide offering in public restrooms until I came to Japan.
