The Washington Post has a wifi hotspot search tool that pulls up over 2,000 places in Tokyo, and you can find wireless internet in other cities, too, just by changing the search terms. I had no idea you could surf the net from McDonald's!

I have seen a few sites that show hotspots. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find an accessible free wifi spot in Japan yet.
