Apparently part of the defense was that the men were incapable of disobeying their trainer's orders. As much as "following orders" is a pathetic excuse most of the time, if these guys had been conditioned in a stable in which this kind of torture was regular, they may have had a point - only a slight one, though.

If they bore such a heavy criminal responsibility then why is the prosecutor only asking for 3.5 years? Seems pretty light to me - I wonder what they will ask for in the trainers case?
3.5 years for witnessing the taking of another person's life after not only several regular beatings but putting them under some severe emotional stress for untold years?
Sometimes I wonder just what the value of a human life is to the various legal systems around the world ...
