Court proceedings for trials involving juvenile defendants may undergo a big change if the Legislative Council’s recently submitted revision to the Juvenile Law goes through.
The proposed changes recommend that victims and their families be allowed to attend trials at the judge’s discretion when young defendants are charged with murder and other serious crimes. Ordinarily, the emphasis of a trial in Japan is on meting out punishment to those found guilty. In cases involving those under 20 (the age of majority in this country), the emphasis is placed on what to do with the offenders, be it rehabilitation or some other light punishment.
