OK So I been reading all the comments on this issue. I have not really got into the debate due to the fact I don`t see what the big fuss is all about. I have listened to both sides of the issue. I feel that if one night a year people want to lax the normal rules for riding on the train to fully celebrate the tradition of Halloween I say go for it. Halloween is all about kicking `the man` in the teeth by breaking social norms and having a good laugh about it.
I know that the hard core conservative types are gonna jump all over me but that only makes it more enjoyable and funny. When minor social norms are broken it forces society to realized just how over bearing and unreasonable it can be at times. Halloween is a chance to remind people to relax a little bit. The world will not stop spinning if a few people throw a little party on the damn train for an hour.
So, just relax everything is gonna be ok. The train will not stop working. The nation is not going to fall apart. Society will not turn to shit. Your ok and I`m ok. Just be cool and it will be over soon.

The only problem with all that is that the norms you are breaking belong to a society that is not your own. Furthermore I don't think it is unreasonable to expect people not to crowd onto parts of the public transportation system.
The majority of the issue is in the fact that the party is taking place on the transportation system. If this was going down in a park it wouldn't be a big deal. Every year Ueno has ohanami drinking and no one minds because parks are an appropriate place to gather. This isn't rocket science but some people just can't seem to understand why people are saying "Wait, a second, that's just a rubbish idea."

I don't usually get involved in these topics because any decent response is usually seen as a green light for idiotic replies. However, I think what Jordon is saying is right.
By doing it on a train they're forcing their little party onto people who just want to get home to their families or wherever. It's just rude, whatever country it's in. I bet if these idiots where trying to go about their day in their home country and a foreigner invaded their personal space by breaking one of their social norms they'd be furious.
Some people seem to think that foreign countries are just big playgrounds where the normal rules of social decency don't apply. It's shameful.
They're called social norms for a reason. If you break a social norm you're fucking up someone elses day. That's just rude and selfish. If they want to get drunk and party their ass off then there are places for that. They're called clubs. Or as Jordan says, take it to a park. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a good time, but I don't feel the need to do it by fucking up public transport.
It's not like the passengers can get away from it all either. They're stuck amongst a bunch of drunk idiots until they reach their station, and no, they shouldn't change trains if they don't like it.
If a group of people decided they wanted to go to your regular club, turn off the music, stop the flow of alcohol and watch a drama on the big screen when you wanted to get drunk and party you'd be furious. So why do you think it's ok to invade a place that is normally quiet and start shouting, drinking, messing with lights and generally intimidating all the other passengers?

Oh really? That's news to me and I would guess most of the rest of us.
But, if you insist on being an ass, be an ass in a private space, and don't use stupid justifications for your law-breaking, which does sound very much like the booked speeder moaning about why the police aren't out catching "real" criminals.

Like Shane I am not interested in arguing my point of view when rationality is clearly in such short supply but I will say that you should stop making assumptions about who has flagged your annoyingly repetitive articles that have been filling the Upcoming pages with your ego - I've flagged two of them, one of which had already been flagged by someone else.
Sheesh, take a hint.

I agree with Shane. Lighten up. Let the gatherings proceed. Let's enjoy the vibrancy of a cosmopolitan city. The regular commuters on the Yamanote line see vomit and drunks and food scraps and smell stinky people and grope and get groped and shove and glare and tussle everyday. A few minutes among the whacky (mostly) foreigners in costume celebrating a well-known occasion by comparison is survivable. There will be good humor enjoyed by all on the train except by a few who are inclined to complain and grumble but do things that annoy others at home and in the office because they practice the "Do as I say Not as I do" philosophy.

Wait a second - my lighten up comment was in relation to the comments on the event and the personal attacks in articles previously soc'd.
I'm actually not a huge fan of this event and think it does not represent the majority of foreign community well at all. And, no, I don't want to debate my viewpoint or defend it here

I read on 2ch that someone brought a Yorkshire terrier to this year's Yamanote Line party, set fire to it and chucked it out of one the train windows at Sugamo station.
Bloody terrierists.

last week? Didn't hear about that but there certainly wasn't any Halloween Train tonight. The police stopped them from even entering the stations in small groups and check their IDs. Anyone without a passport or gaijin card probably got hauled off.

hey I just posted this to japanprobe so I hope you don't mind me posting it here as well:
not too sure on the validity of this report but I heard the Halloween Train did not happen because police stopped groups of costumed foriegners and japanese in groups of 5 or more before they even entered the station. Most people I guess never even knew what happened. Now that's Japanese efficiency!
I got a text msg from a mate at Ebisu saying apparently there was a minor scuffle between some salarymen and foriegners in costume. Don't know if it was related to the Halloween Train or not but some of the foriegners were taken away possibly arrested. Wouldn't it be cool if that were Samurai Dave?
I heard the police were on the look for him and maybe even had his photo from youtube! You can't pull one over on the police in this country! No sir!
Epic Fail all around! I've been one of those critics on his youtube videos and I followed the link there to here and read around a bit to see the level of his "popularity." Ha!Happy Halloween!
