Manto-kun is the new rival for the hideous Nara mascot Sento-kun. This article is in Japanese, from the Asahi Shimbun, but it includes pictures of both characters. Take a look. The freaky looking deer-horned Buddha is out, and the little caped Pokémon looking fellow is in. Hooray!
EDIT: The link now points to an English article.

I found a fun YouTube video of the new Manto-kun character here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ErD8BMNDu3A
But I'm still confused. Sento-kun is still the official mascot, is he not?

You're correct, sir. Manto-kun will be used by businesses and individuals who dislike Sento-kun. (Which is probably a fair number...considering his freakish image.) Sento-kun retains the official status, but Manto-kun is sort of the quasi-official mascot. He's the official un-official mascot. See?

I've edited this to point to Deas' own article on Manto-kun. If you want to see the original Asahi.com article in Japanese, it's here: http://www.asahi.com/culture/update/0602/OSK200806020065.html

Thanks! But just so you know, I was trying to do what people asked and avoid blog-spam if the original article is available. I wasn't intentionally link-baiting!
Note - I just used 2 words from English internet slang. Weird.
