This summer, thousands of people here on Hokkaido island switched to daylight saving time with the idea that they would start work an hour earlier and get off in time to enjoy the long summer evenings. But thousands of others here didn't make the switch.

I've always been very annoyed by the lack of daylight saving time in Japan, and have wondered why in the world the government doesn't institute it. I mean, who needs daylight at 4:30am? That's a bit ludicrous to me. Not as ludicrous as it being dark at 7:30pm in summer though.
During my study abroad year, I was always surprised at how it became dark so early. That is definitely weird.
