Proposed revisions this spring will ban cyclists from holding an umbrella, listening to music, gabbing on the phone and riding in other reckless ways, sources said. I for one am overjoyed they're getting rid of the most annoying people in Japan.

This is madness! People have been cycling on pavements with umbrellas for decades. Why the sudden change? No listening to music while cycling? Who are they trying to protect with that one? If a cyclist is dumb enough to have the volume turned right up, then they deserve to get hit! I don't think Big Brother needs to dictate what you can hold or listen to. As for riding on the street, are you kidding me??? In the UK, we have cycling proficiency tests, and drivers learn to accommodate cyclists when learning to drive. I think there are even rules in the Highway Code about dealing with cyclists. In Japan however, if you suddenly throw all the cyclists into the street, people will just drive over them!
