"The real cruelty, however, does not lie in the method of execution,"
Is this a bad joke? No mention of the real victims in this piece? You remember them? The reason they got this sentence?
How about an in depth about the crimes/murders they committed and the lasting trauma it has caused the families left behind? This chain of sad events was started by the person with the stretched neck.....don't ever forget that.
Like a famous line from a Clint Eastwood Movie goes:
"Don't just hang em'......HANG EM' HIGH!!!"

I can't understand why you would have a such a black and white opinion of the death sentence. People that have such views really scare me.
While criminals should be punished sometimes mistakes are made and innocent people are convicted. This certainly happens in our home countries and with Japan's 99% conviction rate I can guarantee it happens there. I love Japan and while I follow the law, God help me if I ever was falsely accused of something there.

Maybe. Hell, I'll even give you "likely". But remember, this is Japan, where crime suspects are held for questioning for 23 days without a lawyer, and where confessions are beaten out of suspects and then used to secure convictions -- well over a 99% conviction rate, actually.
Given how guilty verdicts are arrived at here, I think that there is too much room for error.
