I have a terrible habit when it comes to studying Japanese in that I spend more time looking at my PDA rather than the printed vocabulary sheets that I have. Unfortunately, this has meant that my study is light-years behind where it should be … so it’s time to solve the problem the best way I know how: with software.

It does look good as a flashcard app - definitely good luck with it - but, though it says it is a version of Supermemo, I'm not clear if it is actually an SRS app though - is it?

I'm not sure what you mean by SRS, however, the next release will take into account how often a question is memorized, and how often it's marked for review. The mathematics is down (well ... on paper), and I just need to implement it in the code.
The next release will do the following:
* make use of memorization algorithm on difficult items
* allow for multiple-choice question/answers
* export custom-made quizzes
Of course, a few of the rough spots will be ironed out as well. By version 0.2, I hope to support things such as images, mp3's, and user-written answers
If there's anything in particular that you think would be a great feature, please let me know.

Hey Matigo, just fyi SRS stands for spaced repetition software. That is the term for programs like Anki.

Indeed Jordan and also Supermemo. From what I can tell, there is a real "movement" attached with SRS - many people who use it seem to be almost cult like in their espousal of it lol! So perhaps in your marketing it would be a good idea to be careful not to compare your system to Supermemo etc... unless it is based on Leitner's SRS algorythm just so as not to arouse their ire. From the forums I've looked at, any new software comparing itself to such applications can get a real dressing down in the community. In fact, that attitude has played a bit of a role in my failure to try it yet - I am suspicious of anything which evokes scientology-like devotion lol!

Ah, I don't plan on being part of any sort of cult movement or anything. SRS programs work for some people, and fail for others. I'll be sure to distance it from SuperMemo and whatnot, though, just to make sure that there are no ultra-negative reactions to it. If someone wants to hate my programs, that's fine ... but so long as it's because my applications suck rather than what category they belong to

I have to say that they do work at least for me. I recently started a deck with anki and within a couple weeks had memorized around 700 words. I think it is also about how you use it and how often. You have to really hammer on the ones you don't know and write down the kanji that are new to you. It can take a fair amount of time, but it sticks with you.

Watching my husband's progress I have to wonder how much the memory comes from the process of making the deck yourself as well. Not saying the SRS isn't the major factor but I definitely think there's something to that extra engagement - I am using the Declan cards on my PDA which is great for learning because of the animations audio but feels very much like just learning the times tables again lol.
