I went on a hunt for an electronic dictionary actually made for those learning Japanese rather for native Japanese speakers - and I found one! This is a review outlining why not a "normal" denshi jisho and a link to where I found mine.
Heading over to have a look at it now, Matigo. A quick question - how does it differ from Anki (also based on SRS and which my husband uses but I have not got into yet)?
Anki works on Windows, OSX and Debian, however, QuickStudy works on Windows Mobile.
Anki has a dictionary, QuickStudy does not (yet).
Anki has useful reporting, QuickStudy does not (yet).
Well ... I guess I could knock QuickStudy down quite a bit, but it's only an Alpha. The biggest advantage to QS is that it's mobile. In the not-too-distant future, this will also be made available for cell phones running SymbianOS (Nokia phones) and other platforms
The electronic dictionaries sold in Japanese stores and directed towards Japanese speakers work fine. All of them have English-Japanese and Japanese-English, and some of the expensive models have even better features. (Mine has a Japanese-Japanese dictionary that can pronounce words aloud)
Well ... I guess some could ... but still. There's nothing quite like a programmable PDA to get some decent flashcard-like applications and whatnot going
It's Windows Mobile, and it's called QuickStudy. I just wrote it this weekend
I'll have the Alpha available for public consumption in a few hours and, to make the initial release a little more user friendly, I'll even include the Japanese word lists for levels 1 - 4 ... ready for import!
If it works fine for you then that's great but I found I couldn't work out even how to use them - even with the canon with the English OS I couldn't find which dictionary to search since it was all in Japanese (except occasionally the word "Oxford"). If you have a little more Japanese or someone to help you learn how to use it then that's great but as a dependant wife of a company transferee without a job to go to where there are Japanese speakers around to help I found them all impossible. This one I could use straight out of the box without even reading the documentation!
What works for some won't necessarily work for others...

The world is mobile.
