Denshi Jisho - for Native English Speakers!

Posted by DBR, 321 days ago in Learning Japanese

I went on a hunt for an electronic dictionary actually made for those learning Japanese rather for native Japanese speakers - and I found one! This is a review outlining why not a "normal" denshi jisho and a link to where I found mine.

Interesting ... this Denshi Jisho on a PDA is similar to what I've been putting together for the last few weeks for my own PDA ....

Heading over to have a look at it now, Matigo. A quick question - how does it differ from Anki (also based on SRS and which my husband uses but I have not got into yet)?

Anki works on Windows, OSX and Debian, however, QuickStudy works on Windows Mobile.

Anki has a dictionary, QuickStudy does not (yet).

Anki has useful reporting, QuickStudy does not (yet).

Well ... I guess I could knock QuickStudy down quite a bit, but it's only an Alpha. The biggest advantage to QS is that it's mobile. In the not-too-distant future, this will also be made available for cell phones running SymbianOS (Nokia phones) and other platforms :)

The world is mobile.

The electronic dictionaries sold in Japanese stores and directed towards Japanese speakers work fine. All of them have English-Japanese and Japanese-English, and some of the expensive models have even better features. (Mine has a Japanese-Japanese dictionary that can pronounce words aloud)

Ah, but can it *teach* you Japanese?

Well ... I guess some could ... but still. There's nothing quite like a programmable PDA to get some decent flashcard-like applications and whatnot going :P

What apps are you using on your pda Matigo? Is it PalmOS or Windows Mobile? I forgot.

It's Windows Mobile, and it's called QuickStudy. I just wrote it this weekend :P

I'll have the Alpha available for public consumption in a few hours and, to make the initial release a little more user friendly, I'll even include the Japanese word lists for levels 1 - 4 ... ready for import!

If it works fine for you then that's great but I found I couldn't work out even how to use them - even with the canon with the English OS I couldn't find which dictionary to search since it was all in Japanese (except occasionally the word "Oxford"). If you have a little more Japanese or someone to help you learn how to use it then that's great but as a dependant wife of a company transferee without a job to go to where there are Japanese speakers around to help I found them all impossible. This one I could use straight out of the box without even reading the documentation!

What works for some won't necessarily work for others...
