They tell us 46,000 men were surveyed and that those who drank sake were 1.7 times more likely to get lung cancer. So, what is the chance of getting lung cancer if you just smoke? How many of these 46,000 men fell ill?
Let's say 10 of them got cancer without drinking and 17 got cancer by drinking sake, too. That's 0.021% versus 0.037%. Even if the numbers were 100 vs 170, that's still only 0.21% versus 0.37%.
I don't think these percentages are likely to scare many sake-drinking smokers, and that's probably why the article doesn't tell us the real numbers.
