Even though over half the U.S. Japanese population was living in Hawaii during WWII, only a sliver of them were put in internment camps (versus on the mainland, where almost all Japanese were put away). How did this happen, especially since Japanese in Hawaii had closer ties to the Empire of Japan?

Very interesting! I always wondered about the Hawaii situation and figured that besides Pearl Harbor there really wasn't a whole lot for the US authorities to worry about.

The history books and teacher really skipped over hawaii in high school. I never knew that hawaii consisted of 1/3rd Japanese people at the time. Interesting how schools choose to leave information in and out at their discretion.

Japanese community in Hawaii is still big, though I don't know the current percentage. I don't think it's 1/3 anymore, but my guess would be 1/4...that's a wild guess though, and nobody should take it too seriously :)
