Japan's convenience stores are loving the new Taspo card, which forces cigarette buyers to get an ID to buy smokes from vending machines.

Taspo has a become a joke. It's just led to people buying their cigarettes from within the store, and because of that extra demand on the store's staff, they've put the cigarettes right on the counter so you can just help yourself!

I knew that the Japanese would not take to this very well.

Like so many ideas seen recently, the concept was good: prevent minors from getting their hands on tobacco products. But the execution was not well thought out.

Oh well ... live and learn. Perhaps if they make Taspo necessary at convenience stores and for alcohol, more people will get the card and everything will go back to the way it once was :P

Taspo is a total invasion of privacy. Shame on the Japanese government for putting into practice.
